Guide to Liners
Fiber Reinforced Polyethylene liners are the best choice for most natural pools and large ponds because they are durable, long lasting, and are safe for fish and plant life. The liners we use are a 40 mil, so are super tear resistant, can handle extreme cold temperatures and are expected to last 50 years (or more) if they aren't directly exposed to UV light. FRP liners are also 1/3 the weight of a traditional rubber pond liner and can be made in custom sizes and shapes.

An EPDM rubber liner is the typical pond liner material. It is heavy but durable, especially at 30 mil or thicker. Due to its weight and because it only comes in predetermined sizes, we recommend this type of liner only for smaller natural pools and ponds. Rubber liners may be a good choice too if your soil has a high clay content and is prone to extreme amounts of expansion and contraction. Keep in mind though, you will need to seam together multiple pieces of liner for larger projects and this can be difficult to do properly on a dusty job site.
Whichever liner you choose, we recommend padding beneath it with an underlayment fabric. More padding may be needed if your soil is rocky. You can learn more about how to properly install a liner via the educational materials on The Natural Pool Academy website.
